Did you know that the colours in your home can affect your mood and behaviour?  This is not some new age ”hocus pocus” as some may think. Scientific research show that colour can absolutely affect  mood, and even cause physiological reactions, like blood pressure raise, increased metabolism, nervousness and eyestrain.

Generally colour is an electro-magnetic radiation of light and as such influences living beings. Colour radiates in waves – similar to radio waves or microwaves, and you can be sure these waves are real. Colour of your walls, clothes, food you eat – influences you in different ways.

Let’s take a look at some examples of moods and colours and how they can affect you.

To increase your focus and concentration, choose gold yellow and orange - to feel more energized and motivated.  Orange is the best colour for concentration and productivity. To help your children get more in the studying mood, try lighter shades of yellow. 

If you are a writer, artist, designer (or have any other creative job)and want to get inspired, you will want a colour like Violet/purple In your work room. Just dedicate one of your walls to purple or even  just ad a throw, pillow or frame – this will also work perfectly.

When spending an intimate moment with your loved one, add a touch of pink or red.  These two colours encourage passion and affection. 

Are you or someone in your home a senior citizen?  Yes there are even colours that soothe the mood of senior citizens.  Studies have shown that as people get older, the lens of the eye undergoes a bit of an alteration.  As a result, cool colours such as blue, green and purple are viewed with a murky cast.  Therefore direct lighting should be used to help see more clearly.  But do not use a combination of blue, green and purple together.  These colours used in combination will worsen the vision problem. Use one of them and make sure you use lighter shades of these colours.

Blue and Green are always good idea for an office – but It will always depend on type of your business. Blue is a colour of trust and green makes people more agreeable and diplomatic. Add some orange for motivation and energy. For creative work – purple.

Let’s go over some colours and what they mean.


Effects of Red: energizing, stimulating, exciting, powerful, motivating, strengthening, increasing courage & determination.

Best Matching Colours: grey, white, black, green, yellow.

Good for: adult bedroom, limited use in living room, bathroom, limited use in a gym or fitness interiors.

Advice: Never use too much red and always balance it with more neutral colours. Too much red and lack of balance with other colours may cause nervousness or even aggression. Do not use too much red if you have heart problems, blood pressure – blue would be better in these cases as cooling and calming.


Effects of Orange: better communication, socialising, energising, having fun, joy, passion, concentration, productivity, optimistic, enthusiastic, cheerful, self-confident, better decision making, mood enhancing.

Best Matching Colours:  green, yellow, white, a little of red, purple.

Good for: playrooms, crèches, office - combined with other, calming colours, fitness rooms, restaurants, living room as additional colour, not as main colour.

Advice: Orange is great as mood enhancer, use to overcome depression and low moods. Do not paint the whole room with orange, always add calming colours like green or cream, light yellow.


Effects of Yellow: stimulating mental activity, increasing intelligence, uplifting and enthusiastic, increasing creativity, mind clearing.

Best Matching Colours: red, purple, orange, green, light blue, white.

Good for: office (home office )together with other colours or as overall colour in light shades, kids room, hall, playroom, study room, library, restaurants, kitchen (increases appetite & digestive flow).

Advice: Too much of yellow, especially intensive shades, can lead to nervousness and emotional instability. Touch of green will bring the balance back.


Effects of Green: rejuvenating, refreshing, calming, dependable, agreeable and diplomatic, peace, harmony, materialistic, healing.

Best Matching Colours: red, orange,  purple, blue, brown.

Good for: office (home office), kids room, hall,  kitchen, bathroom (green plus brown), insurance & financial agencies, banks.

Advice: Use green in combinations with warmer colours, however green can be dominant. When you use too much green, it could make you possessive and selfish, maybe jealous. Warmer and lighter shades of green are safer.


Effects of Turquoise: clarity, concentration, calming, restoring, refreshing, emotional balance, better communication, patience.

Best Matching Colours: pink, purple, brown, white, blue, grey.

Good for: kids room, bathroom, kitchen (lighter shades).

Advice: Too much of this color in your home may give you an overactive mind and create emotional imbalance. Balance It well with other colours.


Effects of Blue: calming, inner peace, healing, increases wisdom, honesty, trust.

Best Matching Colours: different shades of blue, light yellow and cream, white, brown, green, a Little orange.

Good for: office (home office), kids room, bathroom, kitchen as additional colour, insurance & financial agencies, banks.

Advice: Too much of blue can literally make us „blue”, a Little depressed or sad, so be sure to balance your room with some live, optimistic colours like green, yellow, orange.


Effects of Indigo: knowledge, power, and integrity, creativity, intuition, vision, faithfulness, responsibility.

Best Matching Colours: red, orange,  purple, blue, brown.

Good for: personal growth & religious interiors as additional colour, creative business premises, kids rooms as additional colour, bathroom.

Advice: Indigo has to be used together with live colours, It cannot be a dominant colour as It Gould make you a Little depressed, judgmental and fearful.


Effects of Purple:  spirituality, imagination, inspiration, vision, intuition, empathy, kindness, respect, dignity, honesty.

Best Matching Colours: green, yellow, brown, pink, white.

Good for: personal growth & religious interiors as additional colour, creative business premises, kids rooms, bathroom, living room (lighter shades), hall.

Advice: If you want to use purple as dominant colour, mix and match lighter and darker shades or use lilac/mauve shades. Too much or too intensive purple can make you cynical and immature. Break down purple with elements of light green or yellow.


Effects of Pink: emotional, unconditional and romantic love, compassion and understanding, nurturing, romance, warmth, hope, calming, sweetness, caring, secure, excitement.

Best Matching Colours: light brown, purple, white, green, black.

Good for: girls rooms, adult bedroom as additional colour or main, but In lighter shades, kitchen with addition of other colours, bathroom, beauty/hair salons.

Advice: Pink In some cases can make you too emotional and immature. Use reasonably, prefer mix of lighter and darker shades Or lighter over the darker shades for main colour. Pink is very emotional and feminine colour, bare that In mind when have any men In the house – you do not want to make them too „prissy” :)


Effects of White:reflective, awakening, openness, growth,  creativity, protection, encouragement, clearing, balance.

Best Matching Colours: It can be combined with any colour.

Good for: Any interior.

Advice: Too much of white could make you feel bored, isolated, critical, unimaginative, sometimes even kind of lost.


Effects of Black: dignified, sophisticated, strength, power, control, transformative.

Best Matching Colours: It can be combined with any colour.

Good for: prestigious office and interiors, a little bit of black can be used In bathroom, adult or teenage bedroom, not too much In a kitchen, not too much in living area.

Advice: Too much black can cause depression and mood swings. It can cause you to be pessimistic.  Combined with white only, it can create an argumentative atmosphere. It is best to use some live colours with black to lighten and brighten its energy. Black should never be a dominant colour.


Effects of Grey:  calming, neutralising, soothing, steadying, compromising, sophisticated.

Best Matching Colours: Any colour can be used with grey.

Good for: Any interior.

Advice:  Use grey with Any colour. It can be dominant colour, just brighten It up with some other colour, even decorations will do. Grey without any other colour can be de pressing and make you feel detached.


Effects of Brown:supportive, comforting, reliable, protective, warm, sensitive, stable, organised, stabilisation.

Best Matching Colours: cream, green, purple, yellow, white, light blue, pink.

Good for: Any interior, lighter shades are better.

Advice: When using dark brown, make sure It is not a dominant colour. It could make you bored and moody.
